Nutmeg heals acne and inflammation

Nutmeg is known for its curative properties that help in reducing breakouts and sun burns. In Ayurvedic medicine, it has played an important role as an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial constituent. The bioactive compounds found in this spice help in reducing cystic as well as hormonal acne.

Nutmeg as an anti-ageing compound

According to scientific research, nutmeg contains 20 compounds that belong to various categories including neolignans. The neolignans in this seed help in fighting several signs of ageing like wrinkles and skin sagging. They work by keeping the adipose tissue under the skin firm. This is one of the main reasons most skin firming creams today contain nutmeg extracts.

Nutmeg for oil control and clogged pores

This wondrous spice also has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties which when applied to oily skin, reduce the chances of clogged pores and eventually skin infections. Applying in in the long run helps attain a smooth and clear skin free of bacterial acne.

You must be wondering how to incorporate this amazing spice you just discovered into your skin care routine! Here are two very simple DIYs that will give you all the benefits of Nutmeg in one go:

Nutmeg-milk mask

Take two-three teaspoons of fresh milk and add half a teaspoon of crushed nutmeg powder to it. Apply the paste evenly onto your face and neck. Keep it on for 20 minutes or until it dries completely and then wash it off with warm water. This mask helps reduce spots and rejuvenates the skin leaving your face feeling fresh and glowing! Remember, if you have oily skin, use toned milk instead of full cream.

Nutmeg Scrub

For a DIY ayurvedic scrub, use powdered nutmeg with crushed lentils or oatmeal. Use the mixture as a scrub on your face and body to remove dead skin, excess oil and to unclog pores.

Please note: Nutmeg acts as a strong astringent. So, for those with sensitive or excessively dry skin, it is recommended that you carry out a patch test before applying nutmeg all over your face.
