HOW TO CHOOSE RIGHT SUNSCREEN FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

What is a Sunscreen?

Sunscreen is a product that protects our skin from the harmful UV radiations. It basically acts like a thin bullet-proof layer which stops the UV photons to enter the skin surface. The UV radiations are very harmful; they can cause early skin-aging and can also cause sunburns. So, applying a sunscreen is extremely essential. Sunscreens are available in the form of lotions, creams, gel and even sprays. Many moisturizer and makeup products also offer some degree of sun protection in them.

What is meant by SPF?

SPF or sun protection factor basically is a measure to determine how well the sunscreen can protect skin from UV radiations.  For example, if you experience sunburn without sunscreen in 10 minutes then if you have applied sunscreen with SPF 15 then you will experience the sunburn after 150 minutes. Yes, the sunscreen effectiveness is measured by multiplying the SPF with the length of duration. Dermatologist recommends that instead of using higher SPF, one should use SPDF 15 and must reapply it after 2 hours.

How to Choose Sunscreen:

Normal Skin: Normal skin types are the least problematic sunscreens so you can go for lotion based sunscreens or cream-based ones. This type of sunscreen will give your skin right amount of hydration without feeling heavy, like Inveda Sunscreen Cream Gel

Oily Skin: If you have oily skin then you must know how important it is to deal with clogged pores so avoid any heavy sunscreen. Cream based sunscreen can be very heavy for your skin type and they can clog your pores which will eventually lead to breakouts. So, always use gel based sunscreen to avoid greasy, thick, shiny looking skin. There are many good sunscreens available in the market specially made for oily skin types, Like Lotus Herbals Safe Sun UV Screen Matte Gel

Dry Skin: Dry skin has low level of sebum due to which it feels patchy and dry. If you have dry skin and looking for a sunscreen the n you must opt for cream based sunscreen that only protect your skin from the sun but also provide added hydration. Sunscreen creams that contain glycerin or aloe Vera gel are also very good choice for your skin type Lakme 9To5 Hydrating Super Sunscreen

Look for broad spectrum:

There are two types of UV radiations which re harmful for skin-UVA and UVB. If your sunscreen has “broad spectrum” written it means that it will protect your skin against both. Both the rays are harmful for your skin because UVA rays cause premature aging whereas the UVB rays cause sunburns and allergies. You know UVB can also cause skin cancer. There are sunscreens which claim to give protection against one but always find the word “Broad spectrum” before purchasing a sunscreen.

  • Always use sunscreen 15 minutes before stepping out in the sun so that it absorbs into your skin deeply.
  • One should use 4-5 tablespoon of sunscreen for full body.
